Logic1000 IWD interview: “This day is all about community” | Juno Daily
Mother and motherhood, with Samantha Poulter
Logic1000, the Sydney born, Berlin based producer Samantha Poulter, is known to be rather reclusive, preferring to let her conceptual and individual take on house music do the talking.
But, after a string of acclaimed EPs, she’s about to release her debut album Mother and will be in London for International Women’s Day to play Fabriclive’s all-female line up. Lots to catch up on, in other words. So we tempted her out of the shadows, both to celebrate IWD and tell us what’s she’s been up to.
Here’s what she said.
HI SAMANTHA AND THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS – WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW AND HAVE YOU HAD A GOOD DAY SO FAR? BEEN UP TO ANYTHING NICE OR GOT ANYTHING INTERESTING PLANNED FOR LATER?
Thank you so much for having me, it’s an honour. I’m currently at home in Berlin. It’s been a strange day for me. I’m not sure what’s going on astrologically but every day seems to be both amazing and really shitty, like I’ll feel the whole spectrum of emotions in one day. This morning I had a photo shoot and an interview which was lovely and spend the late afternoon with my daughter, dog and husband. But there’s been some really intense emotions scattered throughout the day so I think I’m going to go to bed early and recover.
WHAT DOES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MEAN TO YOU?
I think for me this day is all about community – feeling the strength and power of the women in my life and community and really honouring their power in this world.
YOU’RE MARKING THE DAY BY PLAYING A SPECIAL IWD FABRIC ON FRIDAY MARCH 8. TELL US WHAT YOU’VE GOT PLANNED FOR YOUR SET?
I’m thinking I’m going to play a lot of old house classics as well as some new bits from my forthcoming album. But yeah, it’ll be mostly house!
CAN YOU NAME A FEMALE ARTIST WHO HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON YOUR CAREER, EITHER ON A PERSONAL OR MORE ‘ROLE MODEL’ LEVEL? WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THEN AND HOW DO YOU FEEL THEY’VE CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR DEVELOPMENT?
If I really think about it, the woman who has inspired me the most – as a role model, and seeing her from afar would be Veneder Carter. She’s a stylist and jewellery designer but I would also actually classify her as an artist. She has made me see how motherhood can be coupled with having a creative and successful career. she has proved that you really can do both. In terms of a music artist who has inspired me, it’s definitely Summer Walker. I admire her work so so much, and actually take inspiration from it. But also, she’s a mother and is not slowing down – all the while prioritising her kids. It’s impressive!
YOU’RE ABOUT TO RELEASE YOUR DEBUT ALBUM MOTHER – DID YOU APPROACH MAKING AN ALBUM ANY DIFFERENTLY TO THE EPs THAT COME BEFORE IT? TELL US WHAT AWAITS US ON IT, AND ALSO WHY YOU PICKED THAT TITLE – SEEMS APPROPRIATE FOR IWD…
I think in practical terms the way Tom (partner and longtime producer Tom McAllister) and I made the album was very similar to the EPs. but we really had this strong sense that we wanted to explore the depths of house music and write our own little love letter to it. It was a huge undertaking and I really hope we have respectfully given our interpretation of the genre and how expansive it is. it’s called Mother mostly because this idea of motherhood is synonymous with growth and transformation and those ideas really sum up the period in which Tom and I wrote the album.
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?
i’m trying my best to get on top of the things in my life that I’ve neglected but also doing the usual things like making tunes, playing shows, lots of storytelling through all the press I’m doing, guest mixes and of course being mother to my most treasured thing in this world – Genie.
