Premiere: Manu Calmet’s frenetic techno sound – ‘Pium Pium’ | Juno Daily
Argentinian drummer, producer and LBTQ+ scenester pushes the premiere boat out
Anyone who’s been following our Tips For 2024 will know exactly how hot South America is for electronic music right now, and Argentina in particular.
The speedy, hard-edged techno sound of drummer turned producer Manu Calmet is definitely a tough approach for a tough life – since 2023, he’s been the resident DJ/live performer of the queer collective/label HIEDRAH, and he’s further involved in the local underground LGBTQ+ scene and says he strives to create “an inclusive space where everyone is welcome to enjoy music and connect with one another.”
After collaborating with Sara Hebe, Sassyggirl, DJ Sustancia and many more and released on Angels Gun Club, and Jerry Horny to name but a few, pulling inspiration from Latin rhythms and Argentinian culture, his latest four tracker lands on Paris-based Wallis’ Jell label.
Heavily influenced by his background as a drummer and appreciation for layered and complex sounds, this four tracker cements the art direction of the label as one committed to offering up something different to the techno realm. It’s also hard as nails and bulging with attitude – just how we like it.
Manu and Jell have kindly let us premiere the ‘Pyjama Party’ EP’s third track, ‘Pium Pium’, ahead its widescale release on March 1.
